Winter plumbing check list?

Make sure before the winter months and the ground freezes you mark where all your drain clean outs in your yard are. You never know when that unexpected drain clog will happen. Don’t forget to mark the clean outs before it’s to late. If you don’t have any outside clean outs make sure you drain your outside exterior sillcocks/hose bibs. If they freeze and break they will need to be replaced in the Spring.

Camera Sewer Line

Scoping your sewer line will tell you an entire story. Twenty years ago we never had video camera capabilities.

Putting a camera down your sewer line once cleaned will show us what’s going on and why you clog up. We always suggest cleaning your drain pipe with a professional company before we camera. Cleaning your own sewer line doesn’t count. The rented machines are not like the professional machines. A homeowner can’t clean a sewer line like an experience technician who does this work for a living day in and day out. Our company does drain cleaning and scoping a picture of your pipe. Before cameras we had to guess where to dig. Most the time we pin pointed the spot within three feet. Now a days we can pin point the exact first spot to dig with the technology of the camera and locator. Make sure you trust the company you hire before making any dramatic decision.
Call Hiawatha Plumbing for any plumbing drain sewer cleaning needs. Let us help you clean your line and camera it. Were the trusted company since 1947.

Root Killing Secrets

The world likes to think that buying a chemical for under five dollars at the local store will magically take care of their root problem. Guess again. No matter the diameter of any root, chemicals don’t just make them vanish or wither away. Weather you have an older sewer line or newer sewer line roots will somehow make their way in.

Roots are attracted to water, so wherever water flows roots will somehow get their too. Plumbing companies are the only people that can properly remove roots from your sewer system. Being that Minnesota is a much colder state are sewer lines are below the frost line. Sewer lines are anywhere from seven feet to fifteen feet under the ground. In warmer states like California or Arizona the sewer lines are three feet down. The difference is tremendous when going to excavate. In Minnesota most plumbing companies have to use backhoes to excavate that far down. Digging with a backhoe you have to be extremely careful near water/gas and other unknown lines. In warmer states plumbing companies only have to hire people to dig down three to five feet. Digging by hand is not only easier but is cleaner as well. Hand digging is easier because backhoes can only dig so far down before they have to switch to hand digging. Once you reach other lines you can’t use the backhoe anymore. If your not familiar with what’s underneath the ground there are important lines and pipes that run though. Next time you have a safe chance to see down in a dug whole, take time and look in without falling in.
Removing roots from a sewer line needs to be professional done. Plumbing companies hire technicians that have years of experience from doing this kind of work day in and day out. Companies that try jetting roots out of a sewer line before cabling are just charging you more money without you knowing. Remember using blades to clean a sewer line is the first step. Call Hiawatha Plumbing today to set up a root cleaning service before you back up at that unwanted time.

Shower rule #1 (Water Pressure)

Having a good steady stream of water is key while showering. Think back to time when your traveling or away at school and the water pressure in the shower just isn’t up to your standards. Make sure your water lines can handle the type of shower your creating. Multiple shower head and jets must have a big enough water line going to them. If your water line going to the shower valves aren’t large enough the pressure in your shower will be disappointing. Consult a plumber if your not sure about your water pressure. If your designing your own walk-in shower it’s very time consuming, but is worth every second in the end. Call Hiawatha Plumbing for any shower questions.
Enjoy and have fun creating your new shower!

Granite sinks REALLY?

When beginning shopping for a stainless steel sink or a granite sink which should it be? There are many good and bad features to each sink. Granite is very durable because it comes from one large piece of stone. Every piece is unique and looks different from the next. Granite doesn’t stain easily at all and is heat-resistant. People have been worried about putting granite in kitchen cause of their fragility. But “If you
know how to care for your stone sink, it will last for a hundred years.”

Stainless steel sinks on the other hand have been around for a very long time. We all know how durable they are and how easy they are clean up. They blend with many colors and there affordable for everyone’s budget. They don’t chip, or stain, or tarnish. Just like granite sinks they are also heat resistant. Some of the defaults are that they scratch, get dull over time and are only available in one color.

Some questions to ask before purchasing a sink are:
• Do you want a sink with a single bowl or a double bowl?
• Do you want one with a soap dispenser? A hot water dispenser? A
filtered water dispenser?
• How do you plan to mount your sink: top mount or under mount
• Do you want a sink that is built in to your countertop?
• How deep do you need your sink to be?
• Do you want something custom?
