Sump Pump Motor & Basket

You may think nothing of your sump pump but what does it really mean?

Sump pump Motor & Basket

Sump pump Motor & Basket

Most houses need and have a sump pump in their homes. The reason is so water doesn’t get into your home. Low spots in homes tend to have annoying standing water siting their. Sometimes in the laundry room and sometimes in a nice carpeted family area which either way can get really old, quick.

Simply put what does a sump pump do? What is their main function?

Sump pumps remove water from underneath your house before it raises up and gets into your home. Which means if the pump motor doesn’t work during a major flooding storm you could end up flooding your house.

Every spring test your sump pump system or hire a company to come out and help. It’s better to pay a service call then to re-do your entire basement due to flooding.

Major Clogged Bathtub

When you see a clogged shower/bathtub lots for thoughts may go through your head. First, you might think “time to call a plumber”. And then you’re done but…..

Clogged Bathtub

Clogged Bathtub

There might be a ton more thoughts going through your head. When I personally encounter a clogged shower or bathtub drain I first think gross and that it’s typically smelly. But, now it’s time to face this gross task. As a drain technician I grab all my tools and put down my drop clothes and go to work. Sometimes working on unclogging a bathtub or shower may be harder then unclogged your kitchen sink or main sewer line with tree roots growing into your pipes walls.

Bathtubs are hands down gross. It’s all hair, soap scrum and hardened whatever is down the drain. Trying to unclog a bathtub drain may also cause a leak. Bathtub drain lines are weaker then other pipes. Leave this work to the pros that clean, clear, unclog, unplug and open up blocked drain lines each and every day. Face it, sometimes it just makes to hire the professionals.

Next time your shower or bathtub drain line clogs up call Hiawatha Plumbing and schedule your appointment today.

We look forward to working with you!

Clogged Urinal

Most of the time men see urinals in commercial facilities. On rare occasion we’ll see a house (typically where a man is living alone) that accommodates a urinal in the master bathroom.

Clogged UrinalWhen urinals clog or plug up, (which is often) most of the time they overflow which causes a mess. The reason why the water runs over and doesn’t stay in the bowl is because most of the time the setting is set with lot of water pressure. Besides having a mess to clean up, working on urinals and cleaning and unclogging them is not as easy as one should think. Removing a urinal from the wall is harder then removing a toilet from the floor. You must be real careful with handling a urinal or it can break unexpectedly.

Hiawatha Plumbing removes and unclogs urinals almost daily in commercial properties some of which include office buildings, doctor offices, health clubs, restaurants, schools & malls. Most people don’t enjoy working on them because of the smell of them and how dirty the are.

Next time you have a clogged or plugged up urinal call Hiawatha Plumbing for help. We’re here for you and we’ll take care of the mess.

Talkative Toilets?

When you think about the word noise, typically it could mean unwanted sound. Loud noise that disturb individuals may also be classified as noisy or unwanted sound. So what do I mean by “talkative toilets”?

Running leaking toilets

Running leaking toilets

When I refer to a talkative toilet, it’s a stubborn toilet that may run, that causes extra noise to be made. It may also increase your water bill sometimes without knowing. There are so many toilets on the market and each toilet normally has it’s own repair parts according to the brand. The toilet industry is ginormous and they keep making new toilets, that have new shapes, and new looking parts inside. So, next time you ask yourself what toilet should you buy that won’t make noise, the answer is they all end up making noise and they all are in need of repair someday. The more expensive toilet doesn’t mean you won’t have issues.

If your toilet is “talkative”, or if your toilet has some kind of leak call Hiawatha Plumbing today and schedule an appointment. We look forward to hearing from you!

Sewage Roots

Most sewer lines need to be professional cleaned yearly, some more often. Depending on the condition of your sewer line will dictate how often your sewage systems needs cleaning.

Tree roots in main sewer line system

Main sewer lines weather they’re made from cast iron, clay, oranegburg, or PVC all have tree roots that grow inside them. Sewer lines carry one thing that roots like and that’s water. Tree roots need water to grow and no matter what, they will find their way inside your sewer line to reach the water the need. Once roots get inside and crack or break your sewer line they need to be cleaned and maintained until excavation is needed. If properly cleaned and kept up with, excavation may be postponed for a long time.

Copper Valve Leaking

It’s been a while since I’ve had time to sit down and write, but here we go. In the picture below you can see a crack in the copper which caused this client to have water pour out and flood in area of their home.

Copper Valve Leaking

Copper Valve Leaking

Just because one person has a cracked pipe doesn’t mean it has to happen to everybody. Now, don’t get me wrong problems do happen with plumbing each and every day, but, if you look over your plumbing at your home, rental property or business place you can catch and reduce the chances of major water damage to occur. We have noticed that major floods happen when homeowners are gone for long periods of time including over the winter or longer weekends. So, the easy solution is to shut off your water main. No one wants to come home to a flood and major damage.

After, you come back from your vacation, turn on your water and check all plumbing on the property. Turn on all faucets and let water run for a couple minutes to confirm everything is working and your back up and working. Plumbing issues can creep up unnoticed.

If you happen to notice any difference to your pluming when you come back call a plumber right away. Never wait when speaking of a plumbing issue. Normally if you notice a difference something has happened and typically with plumbing the problem only worsens and sometimes quite quick.

Call Hiawatha Plumbing for all your plumbing and drain cleaning related issues. We’re here every step of the way. Been servicing the city of Minneapolis and the surrounding suburbs for over sixty fie years.

The Key Toilet

Ever wonder to yourself how to install a toilet properly?

Toilet flange bolts

Toilet flange bolts

In most cases installing a toilet isn’t easy. Take this picture above, the toilet flange/collar and bolts were broken once the older toilet was lifted from the ground. Now most the time this would be a super easy fix but honestly it never seems to be easy at all once you dig in and start repairing. Client call us up all the time in the middle off the project and say “we installed our toilet but now there’s leaking below what should we do”. Or something like “why does the toilet tank leak onto the ground”.

Now, just take a minute and step back from this situation and think. Ask yourself is this worth my time and energy to fix this myself? Most off the time homeowners that are DIY’ers (Do it yourself) try to repair and end up making the issue worse off then if they just would have called in the professional from the start. Meaning, the project now will end up costing more.
